Hurricane Ernesto Over Cuba
Tropical storm Ernesto killed one person in Haiti before making landfall in Cuba earlier today. The storm is projected to strengthen into a hurricane after it passes over Cuba and strike Florida late Tuesday or early Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting hurricane-strength winds of 85 miles per hour.
Florida governor Jeb Bush ordered the Keys to evacuate in anticipation of the storm and said that officials are planning for a Category 2 hurricane. The space shuttle launch was scrubbed.
The Cuban government took serious precautions for the storm to minimize damage and casualties on the island – arguably a much better job of preparedness than FEMA’s last year’s efforts in the states. Today is the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
