Dell’s exploding battery recall: is Sony linked to Al Qaeda?

dell.jpg Dell has just issued the biggest electoronics-related recall that has ever been put out by the Consumer Products Safety Commission, recalling 4.1 million laptop batteries. This comes after a number of incidents involving exploding Dell’s have been reported, photographed, and videotaped by Dell owners. No injuries have been reported.

About 2.7 of the 4.1 million laptops are in the United States. The company has said that the recall should not affect it financially, however I would guess Wall Street will disagree. This might also affect Sony’s stock, as the batteries are actually manufactured by Sony.

So if you bought a Dell laptop between APril 1st, 2004 and July 18th, 2006 leave it at the office and use GoToMyPc to work on it from home. Or better yet, get a new laptop.

So to recap: A bottle of Dasani on an aiplane? Unsafe. An exploding Dell laptop on an airplane? Just fine. I can imagine it will only be a matter of time until al Qaida figures this one out.
